August 2017

This month the local YMCA will host their first ever summer camp experience expressly for LGBT+ teens.  Camp will occur the weekend of the 16-18th at beautiful Camp Hayo-Went-Ha on Arbutus Lake.  The YMCA writes the following on their website:

“Come join us in beautiful Northern Michigan for a traditional camping experience, canoes and campfires, s'mores and swimming in a safe space to explore what it means to be you!  Challenge yourself on our high ropes course and push the edges of your comfort zone.  Meet other LGBTQ teens and participate in workshops and discussions to empower and support the queer community!”

Polestar has been a proud supporter of this camp experience since it was just a rough idea.  If you know a teen who would be interested in participating in this year’s camp, they can learn more and register.

Over the past year many people have expressed an interest in volunteering with the community center.  Now’s the time to turn that interest into action!  We have reached a turning point in our development where we simply can’t do it without help.  We have so many exciting plans for programs, events, and services, but we have stretched our energies to the max.

We have developed a volunteer handbook and a series of policies to ensure the volunteer experience is meaningful and we would like to begin growing our active volunteer database.  If you are interested in working with us, we encourage you to reach out to for a copy of the volunteer handbook and to learn about current and upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Polestar will have a booth at Friday Night Live in downtown Traverse City in August.  This weekly block party features “music, art, food and fun”.  If you’d like to meet some of the Board members, ask questions, or just say hi, swing on by our booth on Front Street on Friday the 18th and 25th from 5:30-9pm.
